Octane number (ON) and Cetane number (CN) are the most important properties for automotive fuels. These properties measured by CFR (Cooperative Fuel Research Committee) engine test methods are measurements of self-ignition characteristics. In Japan, Cetane Index calculated by physical fuel properties such as density and distillation temperature has been used to estimate CN. ON and CN depend on the chemical compositions of hydrocarbons. Generally speaking, aromatics have higher ONs than olefins, followed by naphthenes and paraffins with the same carbon number. CN has opposite tendency. Since engine test methods require a relatively large sample volume and a lot of time to conduct the tests, a lot of estimation methods without engine tests are studied. There is still room to improve for practical use. Therefore it is expected that more practical, rapid and precise estimation methods be developed.
