Municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, etc. are energy sources, including biomass, which are generated near locations of use, stably, and in large quantities. Although their heating value is low in comparison with fossil fuels, these resources have attracted attentions because they are economical and have small CO_2 emission factors. Many boiler facilities, such as those in coal thermal power plants, are shifting from the use of fossil fuels to the effective use of biomass fuel derived from waste and others. Fuel conversion/use of waste plastics from containers and packaging has been recognized as a recycling method although there are limits to the use of wastes as a fuel. Thus, signs of large changes in the trends related to refuse derived fuel (RDF) and refuse paper and plastic fuel (RPF) can now be seen. There is an extremely high possibility of further popularization of waste-derived biomass RDF, similar to solid fuel RPF containing waste plastics as a main raw material, which has a high heating value.
