China began the research on the concentrating solar thermal power (CSP) technology in 1979. After the year 2003, the development speed has been accelerated. At present, a landmark project of 1MWe solar tower experimental and demonstration plant is under construction in Beijing, which is mainly funded by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). It will be the first grid-connected solar thermal power plant in China. It's expected that the whole industry chain will be preliminarily established with this project. So far, the announced CSP capacity has surpassed 2100MW, mainly in the Northwest regions of China. However, the generation cost of solar thermal power is still too high, which impacts its large-scale commercialization and industrialization process. China will follow the strategy of improving the solar-to-electric efficiency to achieving the reduction in power generation cost.
