The United States has a substantial domestic solar resource situated primarily in the desert Southwest. The direct normal solar radiation levels in this region range from 6 to over 8 kWh/m^2/day with an estimated 2.1E^6 GWh of solar thermal power (STP) potential in just six Western states. Utilizing this vast resource could supply a large fraction of current and future electrical power needs in the United States. As such, both the private and public sectors have been actively involved in research and development aimed at bringing STP systems to market. A review of STP projects, both research facilities and commercial developments, is presented in this paper. The scope of this review extends from the beginning of active STP research and development in the 1970s to the present day while including the three main STP platforms: parabolic troughs, dish-Stirling systems, and central receivers (power towers).
