At the end of March this year, the Sakhalin II project commenced its LNG production after almost 20 years of feasibility studies and development work. Start up of the project means a lot both to the Russian Federation and Japan, and also brought substantial merits not only to both countries but also to all the stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region. There were a lot of difficulties and challenges to develop the project, most of which are inherent to the harsh arctic climate, marine conditions and environmental circumstances in Sakhalin island. In this article, I outlined how we dealt with those challenges (environmental issues in particular) to bring the project on stream and gave some insights about the meaning of the start-up of the Sakhalin II project in the Russian far east.
