The role of biomass is becoming more and more important as renewable energy. As biomass utilization has the problems of collection and transportation, a small-scale dispersed power source should be required. Biomass gasification CHP system is one of the most effective solutions because of its high conversion efficiency. However, gasification gas has the characteristics of low calorific value and unstable. Yanmar has developed dual fuel engine CHP system which can use gasification gas between 0 and 90% of its power output. Dual fuel engine can stably run such low calorific gas because of its high ignition energy by diesel fuel injection. The characteristics of the engine are high thermal efficiency and low NO_x emission. Because this system can change operation mode automatically from dual fuel to diesel mode in case of malfunction of gasification system or lack of biomass fuel, the dual fuel engine is robust system for biomass gasification. In fact this dual fuel engine CHP system have achieved over 5000 hr as commercial use in Torisumi plant.
