ENERGY ADVANCE CO., LTD has upgraded "Makuhari DHC (District Heating & Cooling) center to a highly efficient CHP (Combined Heat & Power) plant installing a latest large natural gas engine and started operation since April, 2007. This system generates electricity with the large natural gas engines (15,700kW) that has high generation efficiency of 45.6% [LHV], and makes full use of exhaust heat by using steams (180℃) created by an exhaust heat recovery boilers and chilled water obtained by supplying engine jacket cooling water (88℃) to hot water absorption refrigerators. Moreover, this system, which also has high efficiency electric turbo chillers, is characterized by extremely high total efficiency. The operating results for fiscal 2007 show the large effect that the primary energy reduction was 25.4%, and the CO_2 emission reduction was 58.9% including reduction effects achieved by selling electricity to the utility grid. This technology is the first leading case in Japan with a combination of CHP (selling large amount of electric power to the utility grid) and DHC (utilizing generated output as well as exhaust heat).
