To solve the global warming problem and the energy problem, worldwide hydrogen energy system is strongly desired, in which hydrogen is produced from carbon dioxide free primary energy such as renewable energy or nuclear energy and is used as fuel and energy storage medium. In the hydrogen energy system, electrolysis is one of most prospective hydrogen generating technologies because it's high conversion efficiency of electricity to hydrogen and simple structure. In this paper, present status and possibility of electrolysis is surveyed. After explaining the principles and characteristics of electrolysis, present status of alkaline water electrolysis systems and polymer electrolyte water electrolysis systems is introduced. Further, advantages of high temperature steam electrolysis systems with solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) are explained. Finally, status of development of SOEC systems combined with nuclear reactors and low calorie gas assisted SOEC systems are introduced and issues for further development are discussed for these new systems.
