The CO_2 Geo-sequestration Technology with ECBM in Japan was carried out as a theme of the programs for measures on CO_2 sequestration supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for the six-year period from FY 2002 to FY 2007. The aim of the project was to develop system and element technologies such as storing CO_2 in coal seams, and recovering the methane displaced by the injected CO_2 for use as a clean energy source. The field for the micro-pilot test was to identify the optimum specifications of facilities and to obtain fundamental information on the conditions of CO_2 injection. The improvement of CO_2 injectivity is the most important of these subjects. The injection of CO_2 in a supercritical condition seems to be one of the most effective methods of achieving such improvement. The results obtained under the unfavorable conditions found in Japanese coal seams, where permeability is relatively low, are expected to form the foundation for future CO_2-ECBM projects both domestically and overseas.
