As pressure builds in Japan to decrease CO_2 emissions in the thermal power generation sector, it is necessary to evaluate the potential for introducing zero-emission coal gasification power generation technology, including carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. Because CCS requires a significant amount of energy, power generation efficiencies must be maintained at the highest possible levels and the development of improved, higher efficiency technology is critical. Given this, NEDO is striving not only to reduce CO_2 emissions by improving the efficiency of coal gasification power generation technology, it is also taking the initiative to advance zero-emission coal gasification power generation technology, including CCS.
