This paper examine some recent aspects of Japanese metropolitanization. Popular social attention presently tends to focus on various problems in the excessively depopulated areas. This is done under the belief that metropolitan problems have a bi-polar correlation with excessive depopulation problems. Notwithstanding that this is true, it should be conceived that some of the present metropolitan problems are not results of increasing migration and that the nature of metropolitanization is quite different from its earlier stage. Among the four categories mentioned in the beginning of the paper, all but one (metropolitan population growth still continues as a phenomenon) need a conceptional change in problem definition. The writer proposes the identification of an advanced stage in which many of the structural phenomena develop in the process of metropolitanization itself, or result from the growth by migration in the primary stage.
