This paper aims to discuss factors that may influence teacher anxiety. Teachers of English tend to experience teacher anxiety (Horwitz, 1996), (Kim & Kim, 2004) and (Zeng & Murphy, 2007). In the current study, interviews were conducted to investigate situations when Japanese English teachers tend to feel anxious, and the variables that can affect teacher anxiety. Statements made by teachers were analyzed by coding and then categorized into four main categories. Throughout the interviews, the teachers described various factors which might affect their anxiety in teaching. The results indicate that Japanese teachers of English often seem to exhibit a kind of anxiety specific to the subject they are teaching. The results also reveal that a variety of interrelated factors may influence their anxiety, such as experiences of staying abroad, English proficiency, fear of negative evaluation by peers, and the complex of teachers' attitudes toward communication with colleagues
