A vast amount of everyday English is structured by metaphor including not only fixed expressions, but also single words with multiple meanings. Yet EFL students often have trouble with these expressions, many of which are different in L1. Learning to recognize patterns of metaphor in both written and spoken English can help students develop greater proficiency in processing both written and oral language. This paper reports the results of a one semester study concerning raising student awareness of the role played by conceptual metaphors in structuring large groups of individual expressions. The results of the study suggest that when students notice that a group of metaphoric expressions draw on a single conceptual metaphor, it can help them to work out the meaning of the individual expressions.
