In recent years more farmers have gained cost advantage by making the business larger in size as the livestock industry that draws on modernized production system has made possible a large-scale management by small number of people. The more large-scale farmers come out, the higher competitive they become one another. This leads to accelerating much further cost reduction. It is, accordingly, true that consumers will benefit more from low-cost products, and also such farmers' ability to be globally competitive will beneficially contribute to keeping imported farm products from increasing. On the other hand in some cases a vast number of livestock to be kept will create higher risk in potential epidemic outbreak in one particular farm. The study concerns itself with the livestock management's size and status in Australia along with Japanese counterparts, and also discusses the issue on the potential epidemic risk.
