It is important for a good understanding of MHD generator and the design of it to compare experimental data with theoetical analysis. Some experiments were conducted on a MHD generator driven by the combustion gas of light oil and pure oxygen gas and electric power output of 17KW was achieved with the thermal input of 7MW. Active part of the generator channel has a constant cross section of 50mm×120mm and a length of 1,000mm, and has 20 segmented pairs of graplite electrode. The electric current at a Fixed load resistance was still increasing with time at the end of one minute test, while open circuit voltage was almost constant. The operating condition of this experimental MHD generator was analyzed by one dimentional flow analysis method. For the numerical calculation, thermodynamic and transport properties of the working gas were assumed to be the values of its equilibrium composition at local conditions of prcssure and temperature. As to open circuit voltage, theoritical analysis and experimental data show good agreement but theoretical values of total current and power output are much greater than experimental values. In consideration of the incresing tendency of electric current after one minute test, the temperature at the surface of the electrodes may be still lower than its final steady value and there may be some working gas layer of less electrical conductivity. The calculation using the electrical conductivity of the gas of 80% of its theoretical value gave a total current-power output characteristic which agrees well with the experimental result. From these results, one dimensional flow analysis of MHD generator can be considered to give rather accurate description of HMD generator even on such a small scale.
