An easily recognizable traffic sign system should be capable of offering passengers effective service in terms of giving directions. A good iconic design should emphasize on the viewer's cognitive foundation for images. In this study, a pictogram is disassembled into several graphical elements, and recognition models for pictograms are set up using "design categories" and "visual recognition models." This study comprises three stages. Stage 1 involves designing the categories of pictograms developed through the focus group method and content analysis method. Stage 2 focuses on the visual recognition models of pictograms. Finally, Stage 3 relates to a recognizability survey for pictograms conducted with the "matching test." The study shows the following results. First, the "design categories" consist of "object," "situation," "function," "movement," and "logo."; Second, based on the mutual application of "visual recognition models" and "design categories", "object category" is recognized mostly using the "element extraction" model; "situation category" using "element extraction"; "function category" using "element template"; "movement category" using "element extension"; and "logo category" using "element template". Third, in designing the categories of the pictograms with high recognition rate, the combination of [object category+movement category] is most commonly used; for visual recognition models, the combination of [element extension + element extraction] is most commonly used.
