The purpose of the present study is to observe how learners' speaking ability changes after a one-month study-abroad programme and to obtain some quantitative data on their spoken performance. Three tasks were designed for this purpose: (1) responding to spoken questions, (2) narrating a story, and (3) using the language for functional purposes. A significant improvement was found in the first task, a partial improvement, in the third task, and no improvement, in the second task. In all of these tasks, the amount of language production increased to a significant level. The results indicate that a short term study abroad programme positively affects learners' interactional speaking ability, but the improvement does not go beyond the areas which concern the basic level of language ability.
