Grace Melbury is the heroine of The Woodlanders. She loves simplicity but is intellectually curious as well. This thesis examines the woman's characteristics in Hardy's novels by analyzing Grace's passion. The first chapter considers Grace's marriage with Edred Fitzpiers, anintellectually sophisticated man. Her marriage enables her to unite her ntellectual life and animal instinct. The second chapter deals with domestic troubles. Grace suffers from her husband'sinfidelity, but like 'a released spring,' she recovers her health and determines to 'love his best.'The third chapter deals with Fitzpiers' teardrops. Grace's tough fibre inspires him and makes him a faithful husband again. They come to respect each other's feelings and work to strengthen their 'reunion.' The motive power is Grace's passion. Grace's passion consists of hope, delight, sensuality and motherhood. Vitality pulses through the couple. She gives full play to her passion, and her passion is an example of what Hardy took to be the woman's characteristics.
