Exhaust gases from an engine of cars, pumped blood flows by cardiac motion are oscillating flows. Therefore the investigation of oscillating flows is an important subject from the viewpoint of not only theoretical fluid dynamics but engineering applications. A non-dimensional parameter characterizing these flows is the Reynolds number. When the Reynolds number becomes larger, the flow turns to turbulence from laminar state in general. However the oscillation stabilizes the flow and delays its transition. In this study, the nonlinear critical Reynolds number is obtained as the function of the amplitude and period of pressure oscillation by use of the numerical simulations of the spectral code. The vortical structures and streak structures are also studied in relation to the change of wall shear stress.
