Using a two-layer quasigeostrophic model we develop a theory of the unventilated thermocline by taking into account viscous western boundary layers. Attention is focused on potential vorticity homogenization and the degree to which the western boundary current affects the Sverdrup interior, discussed by Rhines and Young (1982) and Ierley and Young (1983), respectively. We present different pictures of the structure and evolution of the wind-driven subtropical gyre based on asymptotic analysis and numerical experiments.
