We explain a force law for granular particle interactions for Discrete-Element simulations which allows to recover the sound velocity for the bulk (depending on Young modulus and density) for square particles. For round particles, the sound velocity depends on the particle size, in accordance with (non-linear, non-scalable) Hertz-theory. We find further that friction effects with walls don't influence the sound velocity in granular packings significantly.
