An attempt is made to study fundamental properties of unsteady simulation of turbulent flows where experimental time-series data are introduced as a boundary condition/constraint to improve the prediction results. First, a numerical simulation [denoted as the reference simulation] of a fully-developed turbulent open-channel flow is performed. Then another set of simulations [main simulations] is conducted where time-series velocity data, which are obtained from the reference case and considered as "experimental" data here, are directly assigned as a Dirichlet condition on the free surface in several ways, instead of imposing the usual free-slip, Neumann boundary condition. Time histories of velocities and time-averaged statistics obtained from the reference and main simulations are compared.
