In a laboratory wind-wave tank, the water-side Reynolds stresses are compared with the wind stress above the surface by reversing the propagation direction of mechanically generated waves. The water-side Reynolds shear stress near the surface was nearly equal to the wind stress in the pure wind wave experiment. However, when mechanical waves are propagating parallel to and against the wind, it drastically decreased and increased, respectively, indicating that the tangential shear stress becomes discontinuous across the water surface in the presence of mechanical waves.
