This paper deals with phonetic perception of Japanese phonemes /s/,/ʃ/,/r/ and /d/. 12 preschool children, ranging 5 years 10 month old to 6 years 7 month old, could discriminate between /s/ and /ʃ/, but 7 of them could not discriminate between /r/ and /d/. And all of them could identify /s/ and /ʃ/, and half of them could not identify /r/ and /d/. This paper shows that preschool children have adult-like perceptual ability of /s/ and /ʃ/,but not of /r/ and /d/. So the perceptual development of Japanese phonemes varies from one to another.
