What Influences Success in Listening Comprehension?

This paper reports the findings of research on factors related to listening comprehension. 84 university students were administered three different types of listening comprehension tests: outline-making, fill-in-the-blanks-type tests and dictation tests. They were also given six kinds of tests to predict which subskills or factors had contributed significantly to the listening comprehension performance. Multiple regression analyses showed that vocabulary is critical and that background knowledge and speech perception are also good predictors of listening comprehension, although some notable differences were observed between the three types of comprehension tests.
