This article will examine some of the features of discourse distinctive in the computer mediated communication (CMC). In the first part of the article, the characteristics of English used in e-mail exchanges are summarized. Among them are informality, conciseness, directness, quickness, and the provocative and witty nature of the discourse. Second, Gumperz's and Grice's basic principles of communication are introduced to examine these features. Third, based on Grice's principle, two sets of e-mail messages exchanged in a list format are analyzed in detail. The authors argue there are universal politeness principles at work in the discourse in the CMC, which arguably involves some tension and wit to provide the impetus for continued interaction among "netters." Finally, some of the pedagogical implications are suggested.
