Purpose of this Paper The eminent linguist Kenneth Pike has dealt minutely with the study of American intonation, but his work pays too much attention to the intonation of each word and is weak in dealing with the intonation of sentences as a whole. In addition, he does not give clear contrasts between general, basic intonation patterns and special or emotional ones. Therefore, I found a short article entitled "Status of Utterance", published in 1965 by Drs. E.G. Haden of the University of Texas and Leo Engler of Kansas State University, to be of particular significance in this matter. For it: 1) tries, for the first time, to combine syntactic sentence types and intonation patterns; 2) is distinguishes between general or basic patterns and special or emotional patterns; 3) it deals with variety of patterns, including controversial imperatives and some of the echo questions; and 4) it makes it easier for those concerned with LL to make drill materials. In this paper I would like to introduce the "Status of Utterance" and at the same time to discuss some of the points in it. Description and Explanation "Status of Utterance" can be defined as the combination of the intonation contour or melodic layer and syntactic patterns or the pbatic layer. In the "Status of Utterance" the symbolization is based on the commonly accepted analysis of English. The following is the list of the ten "Statuses of Utterances" (unaccented). [table] Conclusion It is rather difficult to formulate the utterances of speech, bound up as they are with very complicated nuances and feelings. But I think Drs. Engler and Hayden have been, to some extent, quite successful in this. What is more, they have made a significant contribution by introducting a formula for imperative sentences. Interested readers of their presentation will, however, have some questions. For example, wouldn't it be possible to include Status VIII in Status VI? Do the authors intend to say that while all "tag question" of Status IX are only seeking corroboration all "tag questions" of Status Ill indicate a seeking of information? Shouldn't "choice questions" be treated independently of Status III? Despite these questions, such a significant analysis leads me to hope that further studies in the field of intonation can be carried on as a result of this valuable base.
