The first zoea of the poisonous xanthid crab Zosimus aeneus (Linnaeus, 1758) is described and illustrated based on laboratory-reared specimens. Comparisons with previous descriptions of the first zoea from Japan, revealed a number of deficiencies in the earlier study. The first zoea of Z.aeneus is redescribed and illustrated here in detail. The updated morphological characters of the first zoea are used to make a detailed comparison between other known species of the subfamily Zosiminae, and to identify generic diagnostic larval characters of the subfamily.
