This paper attempts to analyze how the literacy of interpersonal culture is cultivated through interaction with others. In this paper we follow the idea of the literacy of interpersonal culture (Hosokawa 2007) and we define that the process of cultural understanding is a search for one's interpersonal culture through communication. To clarify the process of cultural understanding, we analyzed the interchange between Japanese and Korean students on an internet bulletin board. The results of the analysis were as follows: (i) Conflict is a necessary factor to cultivate the literacy of interpersonal culture; (ii) True understanding is brought out if people take a flexible attitude towards others after experiencing conflict; (iii) True understanding involves not only understanding others but also self-understanding; (iv) Exchanging information which exists out of communication does not lead to true understanding.
