In recent years, Japanese language education has changed from fostering communicative competence to fostering an increase in literacy. This study is a practical article discussing a Japanese lesson that the author performed as an introduction to media literacy education, as conducted at a Korean university in 2009. This class does not have any study assignments or set lesson plans. This paper attempts to investigate what the students learn through such lessons by analysis of the data from the students' self-reflection essays. The following points are suggested:(1) More than 80% of students became aware of what Media Literacy was even though they could not understand the standard reading task "Introduction to Media Literacy".(2) Some students gained an understanding of "self-direction" which is very important for contact with media.(3) Through self-reflection, some students became aware of their own knowledge gaps that they had prior to this class.
