The killing and fixing of freshwater planarians in a non-contracted position is often a difficult problem. The usual reaction of planarians as a soft organism to a fixative is to invite strong muscular contraction. Since the shape and size of the body, the coloration, and the anatomy of the reproductive system (especially the shape and the detailed structure of the copulatory apparatus) constitute the chief taxonomic basis in this animal group, taxonomists usually need to fix animals for subsequent photography and for histological and anatomical examination. Sometimes they need to study strongly contracted animals fixed with some improper fixative at the time of collection. These expedition materials are frequently fixed with a dilute alcohol and a formalin solution and some other single chemicals. The purpose of the present study is to examine the effect of various kinds of fixatives on the body form and the anatomical and histological conditions of planarians. The suitability of the proper fixing methods for planarians will also be discussed below. The authors are particularly grateful to Dr. Robert W. MITCHELL, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, U. S. A., for his careful reading and invaluable criticism of the manuscript.
