After brief introductory remarks in Section 1, Section 2, together with the Appendix, deals with ME e rhymes in the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The development of ME e is discussed in Section 3; first the plausibility of the solutions to the development of ME e offered by Wyld (1936), Dobson (1968) and Kokeritz (1953), and Halle (1962) is examined, then it is claimed that the notion of 'lexical diffusion' can most satisfactorily explain the change. Finally in Section 4, concluding remarks are presented.
