In this paper, I will attempt to show that most, if not all, of the apparently idiosyncratic behaviors of the Old English genitive case can be reduced to one or two 'roles', Source and possibly Location. This result is not only interesting as a unified analysis of the case, but also as shedding light on a causality of syntactic change. I assume that relations between NPs are fundamentally captured in terms of an object and its locus. It goes without saying that a different theory will present a different analysis, but our framework, I believe, will prove to be appropriate for exploring nominal functions. In addition, our approach is based on generative semantics, the composition of which looks like (I).
