With the current understanding of basic arc physics, CAD tools based on a mathematical model considering all the critical physical process can be developed to aid the design of puffer circuit breakers. The model takes into account the moving parts of the breaker, turbulence enhanced momentum and energy transport, radiation transport and radiation induced nozzle ablation. With the aid of the general purpose commercial CFD package PHOENICS, the conservation equations for the arc and gas together with the Maxwell's equation can be solved. The pressure, temperature, velocity and electric field in the arc-extinguishing chamber can be visualized. The influence of changing design parameters can be predicted in detail, thus reducing the number of short-circuit tests. Both no load and high current simulation results are verified by available tests.
