Ever since Alfred Marshall referred to the functions of "industrial districts," the idea has often been applied to the innovation and diffusion of productive techniques. This article examines the various functions of industrial districts through a case study of the Dowlais Iron Company, a representative of the south Wales iron industry, and its subsidiaries, that is local railway companies, using the correspondence between the company and its subsidiaries in the 1860s. In particular, this article considers three aspects of the relationship between the iron manufacturer and its subsidiaries, namely, daily trades, problems encountered, and the company's solution toward establishing a long-term relation, and shows their mutually dependent relationship as a type of Marshall's "industrial districts."
