The Burden of the Neck in Hair-Washing Using a Shampoo Sink : A Comparison between Horizontal Supine Position and Shampoo Chair

In order to clarify the burden of the neck when the hair is washed using a shampoo sink, the discharge amount of electromyogram (hereafter, EMG) of right sternocleidomastoid muscle was measured and examined. The subjects for the experiment are fifty-five students. The experiment process is : 1) when the hair is washed, a towel of 2.5 centimeters thick is put at the neck, 2) compare the two cases ; the case of resting in a bed and that of horizontal supine position, 3) further compare the two cases ; the case of resting in a bed and that of lifting up the subject's upper body 50 degrees from the floor, sitting on a shampoo chair (hereafter this is abbreviated to 'the case of shampoo chair'), hi each of the two comparisons, the discharge amount of electromyogram was higher in the case of resting in a bed than in other cases. But, there was no difference to be noted between the case of horizontal supine position and that of shampoo chair. This means that when the subject's hair is washed there is no difference in the muscular burden of the neck between the horizontal supine position and the shampoo chair.
