Ultra wideband (UWB) vehicular radars, less expensive than conventional millimeter-wave radars, have attracted attention from a viewpoint of reducing traffic accidents. This paper presents a two-part experimental and numerical evaluation of the ranging and direction finding performances of a protptype UWB phase-comparison monopulse radar. First, error factors caused by radio frequency circuitry affecting the direction finding performance were identified and numerically evaluated. Direction to a target (a trihedral corner reflector) was measured in a radio anechoic chamber using the Ka-band (from 24 to 29 GHz) UWB pulse radar equipped with a two-element monopulse systems. A delta-over-sigma (DOS) pattern indicating the target direction was derived from the measurements. Next, ranging and direction finding performances were experimentally evaluated by using a passenger vehicle as a radar target. After compensating for error factors identified in the first part of the study, the UWB radar was capable of measuring the distance and direction of the vehicle within standard deviations of 0.19 m and 5°, respectively.
