Chirp-encoded excitation has been utilized for increased SNR in both linear and harmonic imaging. In each case, it is necessary to isolate the frequency band to avoid artifacts. In contrast, the present study combines the fundamental and 2nd harmonic signals, treating them as a single, extended bandwidth. Separated pulse-inverted signals are compressed using customized matched filters and the signals recombined. Simulation and experiments were performed with an underwater 5MHz center frequency transmission. Simulated peak full-width at half maximum (FWHM) indicated increased extended bandwidth, EB, compression compared to fundamental, F, and harmonic, H, compression (FWHM mean: EB = 0.29 mm, F = 0.61 mm, H = 0.43 mm). Experimental scattering from 0.1 mm-diameter steel wires showed comparable trends (FWHM mean: EB = 0.43 mm, F = 0.91 mm, H = 0.89 mm). Results establish the method's feasibility for simultaneously increasing SNR and resolution.
