An elicited production study is reported which investigated the influence of subordination on the prosody of an ambiguous construction. The present findings indicate that, although the two possible interpretations of the scopally ambiguous 'not-because' construction in English are associated with distinct prosodic characteristics, such prosodic difference can be ameliorated by embedding the construction under an if-clause. The present study confirms that this prosodic neutralizing effect of if-subordination, assumed in Koizumi's (2009) reading time study for implicit prosody, is 'real' in explicit, or overt, prosody and that prosody is a major contributor in the resolution of this ambiguity.
