It is difficult to understand the power system behavior intuitively due to its invisibility. The equivalent mechanical model of an electrical power system developed by NODA provides a means of visualizing the power system behavior, and helps the intuitive understanding of the stable/unstable operation of a power system. This study quantitatively evaluates the steady-state stability limit and the maximum local load shedding obtained from the mechanical model. The results show that the validity of the mechanical model is confirmed for small disturbances with weakly nonlinear conditions. However, only the qualitative validity is confirmed for large disturbances with highly nonlinear conditions.
