Micromachining is a manufacturing technology that uses microfabrication techniques similar to those typically used to create integrated circuits, augmented by some specialized microfabrication tools, to also create mechanical structures and devices. Such microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have the capability for small size, high functionality, and batch fabrication manufacturing economics. This paper discusses issues surrounding the use of MEMS to create two medical products that were spawned in part by research from our laboratory. The first is a permanently-implanted, wireless pressure sensor that can sense pressure from inside either aneurysms or inside the pulmonary artery of the heart. The second is a microelectrode array coupled with advanced electronics that allows for the stimulation and recording of electrical signals from external neural cultures.
