With recording density keeps to increase in hard disk drives, spacing between magnetic head and media will become smaller and smaller. But, there is a limitation which will hinder spacing become even small. Therefore, DFH (Dynamic Flying Height) is used and plays a very important role on higher recording density, as DFH can achieve smaller spacing without loss of tribological reliability in the head disk interface. The DFH control is migrating from constant power to constant spacing (back off). In order to decide the back off clearance between the magnetic head and the media, the head must be touched down to the media by head actuator. However, media is not an absolute flat surface. Media run-out will affect the touch down behavior, e.g. slider dynamics, in DFH implementation. In this paper, we investigated DFH touch down behavior on wavy surface, e.g. media with run-out.
