In this paper, a methodology is proposed to estimate all the 10 inherent deviations in multi-tasking turning centers. This method is based on simultaneous 3-axis motion technique in which two linear axes and one rotary axis are controlled simultaneously. The 10 inherent deviations were identified by considering the axis configuration and mutual motions of axes of the machine. Mathematical model was developed by means of homogenous transformation matrixes to carry out the simulations for investigating the effects of deviations on each motion. The identification method consists of five measurements. Double ball bar system was used as the measuring device and very simple jigs were used to set the ball bar. All the deviations were estimated accurately by considering the center offset distances of each measurement which can be extracted directly from the ball bar measurement. Furthermore, the effects of setting errors of balls of ball bar and clamp-unclamp process of B-axis on measurement were discussed and eliminating techniques were proposed. All the results were verified by mean of simulations and experiments. Based on the results, it can be said that the proposed method can be used as an accuracy evaluation and identification tool for multi-tasking turning centers.
