Safety and hygiene concerns now require that lubricants used in the manufacture of beverage cans contain only components listed in the Food and Drug Administration standard list. The lubricant conventionally used for this purpose does not meet requirements. Thus, in this study, new lubricants were formulated with approved components, and their lubricity was optimized by introduction of micelle-forming fatty acid and alkanolamine and by use of polypropylene glycol as a basic agent. The micelles effectively reduce friction coefficient, and hence improve lubricity. The added polypropylene glycol polymer compound serves as a carrier to introduce the fatty acid and alkanolamine into the metal surface. Performance of the new lubricant is superior to that of commercial lubricants.
