In order to decrease the accidents occurring when the driver avoids a forward obstacle by steering, the steering assist control based on the driver's avoidance operation is proposed. First, the general driver's avoidance operation was measured with the driving simulator in the scene of the pedestrian's dashing out in the urban area and in the scene of the stopped vehicle's appearance in the freeway. After that, the factors of these accidents that originated in the driver's steering operation were considered. Next, based on the result of the consideration, the steering assist control that covers driver's steering shortage and return delay was designed, and it was verified that the rate of successful avoidance was improved greatly by using this control.
