We propose a concept of distance-adaptive resource allocation in spectrum-sliced elastic optical path network (SLICE). We adjust the number of bits per symbol of the modulation format in order to optimize the OSNR margin of individual fixed-bit rate optical paths depending on the transmission distance. The shorter paths are allocated a higher bit loading which allows reducing the baud rate and the spectrum resource occupied by the channel. We show in calculation a 25% reduction in required spectral resources when compared to the allocation in the traditional ITU-T grid. The concept is verified experimentally using DQPSK- and 16APSK-modulated optical paths.
