The purpose of this paper is to clarify conceptions of fairness in business and to affirm the effectiveness of those conceptions in business. This attempt is important because the meaning of fairness in business has been ambiguous. To accomplish the fair business activities, we need to know what the term "fairness" exactly means in business. For this purpose, I examine three theories in business ethics which refer to fairness in the first place. Second, I derive three distinct conceptions of fairness in business from the examination of the three theories, which is procedural, fundamental and substantive fairness. Third, I apply those conceptions to the issue of fair-trade and hostile takeover (M&A). In conclusion I argue that those conceptions are significant and useful because they enable us to understand the core of moral issues in business and to help find out the course of action in the real business world.
