In this paper, while presenting examples from the Seto Region, one of Japan's representative ceramic-producing regions, we will ascertain various aspects of life relating to the natural environment and symbiosis that includes the lifestyle concepts of mottainai and moshi wake nai, with the objective of examining deeply how regional identity might be expressed in this region. When we consider the special characteristics of a symbiotic lifestyle with the environment in this region, we can summarize the following general points: (1) In the social environment of this region, the people's social concept of mottainai is reflected through the long history of the region; through the production of ceramics as the livelihood of the people, created based on the optimal and thorough use of kiln tools that were no longer usable; and through products that could not be shipped as well as the full utilization and proper collection of fuel and raw materials needed in the production of ceramics. (2) In the creation of a symbiotic environment in this region, the shared concept of moshi wake nai was accordingly expressed among the people involved in ceramic production, toward the various gods and tools used in production of ceramics, toward the precursors and others, in other words, in their feelings of gratitude and regret toward many factors that exist in the people's everyday lives. (3) The symbiotic lifestyle with the environment in this region is not something limited to this age or region, but is widely shared and transcends regions and generations.
