A decrease in "social competence" has been pointed out as one of the current trends that Japanesesociety is experiencing. Furthermore, one of the reasons for this phenomenon is that attachment, interestand trust toward others are becoming weaker. Recently parents, especially mothers, appear to havea tendency towards both pampering and also wanting to excessively control their children. However, within the group of mothers involved in PTA activities of a church-affiliated kindergarten where I havebeen working, there seem to be few demanding or needy parents. It may be that such a group of mothersconnected with a church-affiliated kindergarten has a natural tendency towards forming deeperattachments and having an interest in and trusting others. There may also be a stronger attitude ofcooperation with others than is found in society as a whole. If this is so, why might such a phenomenonhave happened?I have three hypotheses: 1) the mothers in the group may have certain ideas related to Christianitythat are reflected in their actions; 2) experience with PTA activities may give mothers a chance todevelop their parenting skills; and 3) PTA activities, such as preparing for and holding festivals, createopportunities to strengthen relationships between the mothers and provide opportunities for them tosee various models of parenting. Also, through the extension of the network between mothers thatengaging in PTA activities creates, the kindergarten becomes a place where mothers feel at ease, whichcould encourage them to have more children. In sum, this article discusses how a kindergarten canfunction as a caring community when it has a cooperative and primary role in raising children.
