When making layout planning of plants and industrial equipments, it is most essential to effect systematic approaeh in accordance with the following principles among Industrial Engineering; a. From fundamental planning to details. Whole factory to individual equipments. b. From ideal plan to compromises. c. Grasp the character of type of production. d. Every element which control layout and integrated system of them are to be fully grasped and be checked systematically. namely; O: Organization P & Q: Products and Quantity R: Relationship of activities S: Space of activities T: Transportation and Material Handling e. Basing on fact, problems are to be grasped quantitatively. In order to meet the objective, Method Engineering and Work Measurement are to be effectively applied. And so on. Our MITSUBISHI SHIMONOSEKI SHIPYARD has been expanding their facilities such as ship-building berths, hull fabrication & assembly shops during the period 1969 to 1970. Among them, the hull fabrication shop has been expanded by one bay, and its equipments has been completely rearranged. The author of this paper states briefly the step of IE approach and some viewpoints which he tried to plan the fabrication shop most efficient.
